What is a Tummy Tuck?
Dr. Joseph M. Perlman is seeing more patients than ever before who have a lot of loose abdominal skin. Traditionally, tummy tucks, or abdominoplasties, were performed on women after childbearing age. However, because of the increased frequency of bariatric surgery, i.e. gastric banding and gastric bypass, there are many patients who have lost significant amounts of weight and now have loose skin. In those situations, it is not only the abdomen but also the arms, breasts, thighs and even the back that are affected. Over the past 10 years, the number of abdominoplasties, performed by board-certified plastic surgeons has increased from 34,000 to approximately 200,000. Women still outnumber men 40:1.
For more than 25 years, Dr. Perlman has helped the residents of our community attain the appearance they desire. His skill and compassion has touched the lives of tummy tuck patients from near and far, particularly in the Houston area. He and his staff at Advanced Plastic Surgery Centre are proud of their compassionate, surgical relationships with men and women in Spring, The Woodlands and other surrounding locations. Please take a moment today to set up a consultation in our office.
If you plan to become pregnant or lose weight in the future, you should discuss this with Dr. Perlman during your initial evaluation. Also, scarring from previous abdominal surgery may limit the results of your tummy tuck.
What is the Process for a Tummy Tuck?
There are different techniques for abdominoplasty, and an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Perlman knows how to choose the right technique for you. In most cases, the tummy tuck patient not only has loose skin, but also has some excess fat ,particularly in the love handle and lower back area, as well as the lower abdomen. They also have laxity of the abdominal muscles. All of these problems need to be addressed.
To help flatten the abdomen effectively, the fascia directly overlying the rectus muscles is plicated, or sutured together, to prevent the abdomen from distending. In addition, liposuction is done to a limited degree in the abdomen, as well as in the love handles and lower back as necessary.
The length of the incision and tightening of the musculature determines the difference between a "mini tuck," a standard tummy tuck and an extended tummy tuck.
For the standard tummy tuck, the muscles are usually tightened from just below the breast bone down to the pubic bone. In this kind of abdominoplasty, the skin and fat are elevated off the underlying muscle to the level of the ribs. The hips are then flexed on the operating table and the excess skin pulled down. An opening is made in this skin flap, and the belly button, which is preserved on its stalk, is then pulled up, so that it stays at the same position on the abdominal wall.
For the mini tuck, all the work is done below the belly button or umbilicus. The skin and fat are only elevated up to the level of the belly button and then the excesses resected.
In an extended abdominoplasty, the incision extends past the hip bone to also lift the thigh and the lateral hip at the same time as flattening the belly.
What Does Recovery Entail After a Tummy Tuck?
While you are healing from your tummy tuck, you will be required to wear a compression garment to decrease swelling. Common side effects include bruising (which should take about a month to disappear), swelling (which can last for a few months) and scarring (which will fade over time but will never disappear). Most tummy tuck patients go back to work in two to four weeks.
To make sure you are as comfortable as possible, you will be prescribed appropriate medication to ease the pain. Dr. Perlman and his staff will also monitor your progress through follow-up appointments. We have helped patients near and far, many who have traveled from across the Houston area to undergo a tummy tuck in Spring.
