What Is a Tummy Tuck?

Significant weight loss, age, and pregnancy can leave you with a stubborn area of fat on your midsection. The fat that remains on your abdomen is resistant to dieting and exercise. Heredity also plays a role in how easily you can eliminate these bulges. Right now, you may believe that there is simply no way to have a toned and tight stomach, but Dr. Perlman has worked with many patients like you. A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that removes the fatty deposits as well as excess skin, giving you a beautiful midsection.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

During your consultation appointment, Dr. Perlman evaluates your abdominal area as well as your lifestyle habits and family history to determine if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck. Typically, patients are considered good candidates for tummy tuck procedures if they have

  • Excess skin or fat on their abdomens
  • Protruding abdomens that are not in proportion with the rest of their bodies
  • Abdominal muscles that are weak or separated – a condition that is common among women who have had children and people who have lost significant weight
  • A concentration of fatty deposits in the abdominal areas

As with all cosmetic procedures, you should be a non-smoker and maintain a healthy lifestyle, including proper diet and exercise, to be considered for a tummy tuck. Additionally, a tummy tuck is not a weight loss solution — you should be at a healthy weight prior to your tummy tuck procedure.

What Is the Process for a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure that creates a significant scar on your abdomen. Dr. Perlman carefully places the scar in a location that is typically hidden by bikini bottoms and undergarments. General anesthesia is required for the procedure to help you remain relaxed and comfortable during the procedure. Dr. Perlman performs two types of tummy tuck procedures — full tummy tucks and partial tummy tucks. Full tummy tucks are typically recommended for patients who have fat above and below their bellybuttons, and partial tummy tucks are typically recommended for patients who have fat only below their bellybuttons.

The incision for a tummy tuck extends from one hip to the other, following a line that correlates to the top edge of your underwear. Once the incision is made, Dr. Perlman removes excess skin and fat and also tightens the abdominal muscles with dissolvable sutures. When he is satisfied with the results, the primary incision is closed and covered with bandages.

What Does Recovery Entail After a Tummy Tuck?

You may be required to wear a special compression garment for the healing process. This helps reduce the swelling and also holds your skin and muscles in place until the healing is complete. Because a tummy tuck is an extensive surgical procedure, you should plan to avoid normal activities for at least one to three weeks. Limited activities may resume after three weeks, and you may need to avoid strenuous activities for a longer period of time. You may experience mild swelling and discomfort, and Dr. Perlman may prescribe pain medications and antibiotics.
