What Is De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis?
De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a condition that causes pain that extends from the bottom of the thumb into the arm. The tendons in this part of your hand travel through a narrow channel. When the tendon becomes inflamed, the tendon rubs against the channel. Although De Quervain’s tenosynovitis can affect anyone, women are at greater risk for the condition than men. De Quervain’s tenosynovitis can be caused by rheumatoid arthritis or certain activities that require the repetitive use of the thumb, such as gardening, tennis, and using a trackball mouse on a computer.
How Do I Know If I Have De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis?
The most common symptom of De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is pain along the back of your thumb that extends into your forearm. The discomfort may occur suddenly or develop over time. You may experience difficulty when you try to use your thumb, and your thumb may be swollen at the base. Pain may also be associated with moving your wrist or when you press on the area. During your examination, Dr. Perlman will ask you to move your wrist and hand to help him diagnose your condition.
How Is De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis Treated?
In mild to moderate cases, Dr. Perlman may recommend that you restrict the movement of the affected area. He may also recommend that you limit certain activities that are likely to aggravate your De Quervain’s tenosynovitis. In some cases, cold packs and anti-inflammatory medications help reduce the swelling and resolve the symptoms. In more severe cases, Dr. Perlman may recommend surgery to remove the outer part of the tendon. This allows the tendon to move through the channel more easily, and should resolve your discomfort.
What Does Recovery Entail After Treatment for De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis?
For mild to moderate cases, Dr. Perlman may recommend that you participate in certain activities less frequently or that you follow a strict schedule of taking regular breaks during your activities. If your case requires surgery, Dr. Perlman may recommend post-surgical physical therapy to help you regain strength in your thumb. Recovery from De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is typically longer for those patients who developed symptoms over time versus those who have a sudden onset of symptoms. Dr. Perlman describes your particular recovery schedule during your consultation appointment, and while you are being treated for De Quervain’s tenosynovitis.
