What Is Ganglion?

Ganglion refers to a fluid-filled sac, or cyst, which occurs on your joints or the covering of your tendon. The fluid inside the cyst is typically a thick, colorless jelly-like liquid. Ganglion cysts are also known as “Bible cysts,” and women are more likely to develop the condition. The majority of cases occur in people who are between the ages of 20 and 40 years old. The cysts are more visible when you flex your wrist.

How Do I Know If I Have Ganglion?

Ganglion cysts typically appear on the wrist joint. Less common sites for ganglion cysts include at the base of your fingers, your fingertips, on the outside of your knee or ankle, and on the top of your foot. Ganglion cysts typically change size and feel soft to the touch. You may experience swelling around the cyst as well as discomfort, including aches and weakness.

How Is Ganglion Treated?

Dr. Perlman begins the diagnosis process by examining the lump. He may also draw fluid from the cyst using a syringe or recommend additional tests to determine the nature of the cyst. Some ganglion cysts do not require treatment. Dr. Perlman advises you as to the severity of your ganglion cysts and recommends monitoring or treatment. While most ganglion cysts resolve over time, some require medical intervention. Removing the fluid from the cyst with a sterile syringe may resolve the condition. More advanced cases, however, may require surgery. Dr. Perlman typically recommends surgery to patients who have a great deal of discomfort as a result of their ganglion cysts.

What Does Recovery Entail After Treatment for Ganglion?

If Dr. Perlman recommends treatment by removing the fluid inside the ganglion cyst with a syringe, your recovery may involve regular exercises to move the affected joint. If you undergo surgery for your ganglion cyst, you may be required to wear a splint for up to 10 days. During your follow-up appointment, Dr. Perlman discusses your post-surgical recovery, including physical therapy.
